Ek'Balam

In many South American traditions, Ek'Balam the jaguar god was revered for it's strength and bravery, able to face fears and stare down it’s enemies. It is also thought to represent reinvention, shapeshifting, transformation. As the king of the Underworld, people relied on it's spirit to lead them from darkness into light and it is no surprise it is associated with prescience and the foreknowledge of things to come.

I started this collection in 2020 at the height of Lockdown. The plight of the natural world came to the forefront.

Today, the jaguar is a critically endangered animal and may well become extinct in the wild in our lifetimes, relegated to nothing but a myth, a dream. In this series, Jaguar gods radiate their quiet, commanding presence amongst the ubiquitous graphic icons of modernity. Many believed that Jaguar energy can change the negative into positive. A perfect emblem of our times.
